Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise when she was an infant. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay instantly was captivated when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay remembered being told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Due to her tasks she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in small production studios right out of school.
